Questions about Climate Change/ Carbon Emissions
8 out of 16
Left_corn     Right_corn
1. Has the brand formulated the objective to reduce its CO2 emissions from its own operations (including owned production facilities), by at least 30% in 2020 compared to 1990 CO2 emission levels? Although Renault clearly describes the global warming caused by carbon emissions, there is no reference to such a standard. SOURCE
2. Has the brand disclosed the annual carbon footprint of its 'own operations', including owned production facilities? Renault publishes scopes 1 and 2 of its annual carbon footprint on its website and also through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). SOURCE
3. Has the brand already reduced or compensated its CO2 emissions from its own operations (including owned production facilities), by at least 10% in the last 5 years? Renault only reports the scope 1 and scope 2 carbon emissions at the Carbon Disclosure Project from 2007 and on, so this data from the last 5 years cannot be retrieved. The reductions claimed in this report (p.71) seem to be only for scope 1. SOURCE
4. Does the brand disclose a full carbon Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of its main car models or series, so that the carbon emissions caused by the car production (from raw materials to final product) are also transparent? Renault publishes the Lifecycle Analysis of its New Laguna model (see page 6), but does not publish the LCA's of any other models. SOURCE
5. Does the brand plan to achieve an average CO2 emission of 130 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower for its European car fleet prior to 2015? Renault states that its carbon emissions fleet average for car sales in Europe was 138.9 g/km in 2009. However Renault does not state a goal of at least 130 g/km by 2015. SOURCE
6. Has the brand achieved an average CO2 emission of 160 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower for its European car fleet? Renault states that its carbon emissions fleet average for car sales in Europe was 138.9 g/km in 2009. SOURCE
7. Has the brand achieved an average CO2 emission of 150 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower for its European car fleet? See remark for carbon emissions question 6. SOURCE
8. Has the brand achieved an average CO2 emission of 140 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower for its European car fleet? See remark for carbon emissions question 6. SOURCE
9. Has the brand achieved a 4% CO2 emission reduction of the car fleet average in the last two years? Renault does not report on its fleet average carbon emissions during the last years. So there is no indication of the progress that Renault has (or hasn't?) made in the last 2 years. SOURCE
10. Has the brand achieved a 10% CO2 emission reduction of the car fleet average in the last five years? See remark for carbon emissions question 9. SOURCE
11. Does the brand sell a car that has a CO2 emission of 100 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower? Renault sells the Twingo dCi 85 with a CO2 emission of 94 g/km. SOURCE
12. Does the brand sell a car that has a CO2 emission of 90 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower? In October 2011 the first Electric Vehicles (Kangoo Z.E.) went on sale. It is not clear how the use of electricity of the car contributes to additional CO2 emissions. So not clear if the 70 g/km is met with this model. SOURCE
13. Has the brand developed a prototype car that has a CO2 emission of 70 grams per kilometer (g/km) or lower? See remark for carbon emissions question 12. SOURCE
14. Does the brand sell a hybrid, electric or fuel cell car on the European market? In October 2011 the first Electric Vehicles (Kangoo Z.E.) went on sale. SOURCE
15. Has the brand announced that a full electric or fuel cell car will be brought to the European market by 2012 at the latest? See remark for carbon emissions question 14. SOURCE
16. Does the brand clearly give the carbon emission or fuel efficiency rates for all models on its website? Renault S.A. has disclosed an overview of the average CO2 emission of its passenger vehicles in grams per kilometer (g/km). Use the 'By CO2 Emission' search at the bottom of the page. Also, for the national pages (checked for NL, DE and UK), the CO2 information is 1 click away from the online showroom pages. SOURCE
Questions about Environmental Policy
3 out of 5
Left_corn     Right_corn
1. Does the brand disclose the smog forming exhaust gas emissions rates per km for at least its main car series? The Renault website does not disclose information on the exhaust gas emission rates per km. SOURCE
2. Does the brand report on the emission of air pollutants from its own operations, including owned facilities? Renault has listed the quantity of VOC, NOx and SOx emitted. It has disclosed overviews per production site. SOURCE
3. Are the materials in each new car model of the brand at least 85% recyclable or reusable? The Renault Group states that every Renault car is at least 85% recyclable and at least 95% reusable (see page 143). SOURCE
4. Can at least 90% of all new and redesigned car models of the brand be reused or recycled, and does the brand have a plan to phase out PVC? Renault states that it currently has a recovery rate of 95%, no percentage mentioned for re-use or recycling, except for Renault eco2 vehicles which are 85% recyclable. The long-term objective is to achieve 95% recyclable, but no time line is given (see link). PVC not mentioned. SOURCE
5. Does the brand have clear achievements and targets to increase the use of recycled and biodegradable materials in its car fleet? Renault has a goal to use recycled plastic for 20% of the total amount of plastic used in its cars by 2015, currently eco2 range cars have at least 5% recycled plastic (see pp. 21, 70). SOURCE
Questions about Labour Conditions/ Fair Trade

Left_corn     Right_corn
1. Does the brand (company) have a Code of Conduct (CoC) for own factories and suppliers, which includes the following standards: No forced or slave labour, no child labour, no discrimination of any kind and a safe and hygienic workplace? Renault has - together with Nissan - set up CSR Guidelines for Suppliers, but only asks its suppliers to cooperate and to use the booklet as a practical guide. SOURCE
2. Does this CoC include at least two of the following workers rights: 1) a formal employment relationship; 2) a maximum working week of 60 hours including paid overtime; 3) a living wage; and 4) to form and join labour unions and bargain collectively; and in those situations where these rights are restricted under law, to develop parallel means? See remark for labour conditions question 1. SOURCE
3. Does the brand annually report on the results of its labour conditions policy? Not found on Renault website. Renault has published a list of all the production sites globally (see p. 17), but it has not enlisted the share of each production site in total production figures. SOURCE
